University of the Philippines Quincentennial Webinar for Teachers
Description
The University of the Philippines (UP) joins the nation in commemorating the 500 years of the first circumnavigation of the world and the victory of Lalu-Lapu and his troops in the Battle of Mactan. UP is holding a year-long commemoration with the theme “Gahum sa Buut: Tindig at Pamana ng Bayan” as the University’s contribution to the nation’s quincentennial celebration. It seeks to highlight perspectives on the Conquista from the lens on how we, as a people, understand our shared past and advance a holistic and inclusive history of the nation.
UP’s commemoration is interdisciplinary, taking into account the expertise of its constituent universities from UP Baguio up north to UP Mindanao down south. It aims to facilitate a series of activities geared towards collaboration of academic units across UP System and engagement of multiple publics in and out of the University. These include academic conferences and trainings, cultural performances, art exhibits, and competitions utilizing online platforms in the light of the current public health crisis.
The main activity of the Ad Hoc Committee on UP’s Celebration of Quincentennial Commemoration is a three-day webinar slated on November 24-26, 2021 designed to explain and expound the theme of the commemoration. It aims to outline a set of essential truths on Philippine society and culture before the 20th century. Topics may include but not limited to the following: geographical bases and cultural roots of early communities, emergence of polities such as datuships and sultanates, processes of acculturation effected by colonization and cultural exchange, and building national consciousness in the 19th century. It also seeks to introduce pedagogical interventions on how to discuss the aforementioned topics. Prospective participants to the seminar include basic education social studies teachers and college professors who handle humanities and social science courses.
